Taste, Test and Try Sushi Robots

~ Tackling the worldwide demand for sushi ~

Japan Creative Centre (JCC), Embassy of Japan in Singapore, together with The Japan Foundation, The Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), and Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) and SUZUMO, organised a Sushi Exhibition and tasting event that engaged audiences beyond the conventional wisdom of sushi. The informative and interactive tasting event introduced behind-the-scenes of sushi making with sushi robots, held in conjunction with their ‘I Love Sushi’ exhibition.

Singapore has a high concentration of Japanese sushi outlets and restaurants due to its popularity among Singaporeans, but not many know that majority of them use sushi robots.  The event touched on  the philosophy and technology of sushi robots and how they have significantly changed the sushi industry worldwide.

SUZUMO started off as a confectionary equipment manufacturer in 1961. They began developing a machine that would automatically form sushi rice into balls (nigiri) in 1976 and went on to create the world’s first sushi robot in 1981. It subsequently came up with a variety of sushi robots that can create different rice forms and also become a key driver in popularising conveyor-belt sushi restaurants. In 2015, the company setup a branch office in Singapore to further support the sushi industry and raise awareness about the wonders of Japanese food culture throughout the ASEAN region.
